RYOKANS providing rooms with private open-air baths
Book Iwaso in Miyajima Onsen (Hiroshima)—— Iwaso is just a three-minute walk to the World Heritage Site of Itsukushima Shrine. It is an old onsen ryokan established in 1854, and is located on the island of Miyajima, which is counted as one of the Three Views of Japan. Its upscale-feeling, purely Japanese-style appearance is a distinctive characteristic. In addition to four isolated guest rooms, each occupying a single-storied cottage, there are also rooms in the Main Building (Honkan) and the New Building (Shinkan). You can enjoy onsen at the gender-segregated large public baths (with open-air baths) which offer a scenic view of a virgin forest. Authentic kaiseki meals making use of local ingredients also acquire a good reputation.
Access: One hour 25 minutes by JR Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka Station to Hiroshima Station, 25 minutes by JR Sanyo Main Line to Miyajimaguchi Station, then 10 minutes by ferry to Miyajima Island and 5-min shuttle bus ride (or 15-min walk) from there
