RYOKANS providing rooms with private open-air baths
Book Keishokan Sazanamitei in Tomonoura Onsen (Hiroshima)―― This purely Japanese-style onsen ryokan is located at Tomonoura, which is a port town known as the inspiration for Ponyo, a famous animated film by Studio Ghibli. All the 26 guest rooms, some in the “Honkan” (main building) and some in the “Bekkan” (annex), are washitsu (traditional Japanese-style rooms). Seven rooms come with open-air hot spring baths, four of which face the sea and three face the garden. In the gender-segregated large public onsen baths, there is a boat-shaped open-air bath and a large cypress barrel bath, and both of them command a spectacular view of the expansive ocean. Two rental baths outside the rooms for private use are also available. Guests here can enjoy spa hopping at a nearby onsen accommodation of the same group called Hotel Ofutei. It is just a five-minute walk from Keishokan Sazanamitei. As to dining, you can eat authentic Japanese meals making use of seafood from the nearby waters, such as red seabream which is a specialty of Tomonoura, at a cabin restaurant.
