Book Nanakusa no Yu in Bessho Onsen (Nagano)—— Reopened in 2016 after full-fledged renovation, this ryokan has 16 guest rooms, each offering a different atmosphere while mixing traditional Japanese and modern western elements together. Some rooms have private open-air baths. The floor of the whole building is tatami-covered. The large public scenic view bath on the building’s top floor commands an extensive prospect of Mount Asama and the Ueda City.
Access: One hour 15 minutes by JR Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Ueda Station, then 30 minutes by Ueda Electric Railway to Bessho-Onsen Station and 2-min shuttle bus ride (or 7-min walk) from there
