Book Ryokan Sugimoto in Matsumoto Utsukushigahara Onsen (Nagano)—— This onsen ryokan is a 15-minute drive from JR Matsumoto Station, and has 17 guest rooms. Jazz music playing in its folksy building is a distinctive feature. Every guest room has characteristics different from each other, such as loft, irori (a type of traditional Japanese sunken hearth), etc. You can enjoy the onsen coming from the ryokan’s own spring source at the gender-segregated public baths, and rental hot springs outside the rooms for private use.

Access: Two hours 40 minutes by JR Limited Express from Shinjuku Station to Matsumoto Station, then 25 minutes by bus to Utsukushigahara Onsen and 3-min walk from there
