Book Sui Suwako in Lake Suwa Onsen (Nagano)—— All eight guest rooms in this ryokan are equipped with open-air baths that command a stunning view of Lake Suwa. A mixed open-air observatory bath on the rooftop, where men and women wear bathing clothes, lets you enjoy the lake’s spectacular scenery and onsen at the same time. Kaiseki meals served at private dining rooms also acquire a good reputation.

Access: Two hours 15 minutes by JR Limited Express from Shinjuku Station to Kami-Suwa Station, then 5 minutes by shuttle bus (or 10 minutes on foot)
