On the third day, I travelled by taxi to several tourist spots, and moved towards the north.
Since Awaji Island is a famous production region of vegetables, you can find market gardens here and there.
I arrived at Daigu-ji Temple after a 10-min taxi ride.
The adjacent Hirota Plum Grove was lovely, as it was just the best time in the year to view plum.
After another 30 minutes of travel, I arrived at Izanagi-jingu Shrine, which is known as the oldest Shinto shrine in the country.
This place was packed in a solemn atmosphere.
Another 40-min travel took me to the Awaji Hanasajiki, a park famous for its colourful flowers.
The flower field stretched out with the sea in the background.
The Awaji Yumebutai can be accessed by a 20-min taxi ride from the park.
The attraction was built upon a sweeping hillside that was stripped of soil to provide materials for Kansai International Airport’s artificial island. Designed by the world-known architect Tadao Ando, the Awaji Yumebutai was constructed under the concept of restoring nature destroyed by the human being to its original state, and creating a space where animals, plants and men can live in harmony. This is an “environment creating project” which is out-of-the-box even on a worldwide scale.
The Awaji Yumebutai was the last stop of this tour.
I got on a bus bound for Shin-Kobe Station on the Shinkansen, and then returned to Tokyo by train.
This 3-day/2-night trip was not a long journey, but it’s definitely a fruitful one. Awaji Island, surrounded by the beautiful sea, together with its fabulous onsen ryokans, is largely unknown to foreign tourists. We highly recommend this place to you as the next destination to visit secretly.
